Google Circles - Is Google Getting Social?

There has been some hype around a Social Media platform of sorts that Google is supposedly working on - reportedly going to be called “Google Circles”. However there are mixed messages as to whether this is actually true or not.

ReadWriteWeb suggests that Google Circles will “offer photo, video and status message sharing. Everything users share on Circles will be shared only with the most appropriate circle of social contacts in their lives, not with all your contacts in bulk.” This allows us to think that this is Google’s answer to Facebook.

Initially there were rumours going around that Google Circles would be released in March 2011 at SXSW Interactive in the USA, but this didn’t happen.

Other reports suggest that the platform will actually be called ‘Google Me’ and that Google are referring to it as ‘Emerald Sea’ internally. Whilst we are unsure if it will be called Google Circles, Google Me, Emerald Sea or something completely different, it’s only fair to say that Google are working on a ‘Social Layer’ of some sort, this has also been suggested by Chris Crum at WebProNews.

Google are getting more and more social, with Matt Cutts admitting that social rankings are taken into account with their algorithms. So what needs to be said here is that we can no longer ignore social media as part of an overall Search Engine Marketing campaign.

Many fear Social Media largely because it is the unknown or they see cost of time to their business too great for their perception of what can be achieved. However, in this day and age of practically anything being online, and in real time, you need to be involved so you don’t get left behind online.
